YOU DON'T NEED TO BE A DOCTOR TO IMPACT LIVES
By Cooper Spezzano, New Business Intern, Saatchi & Saatchi Wellness
Last year, for lack of better words, I was having a bit of an identity crisis. At the time, it was the fall semester of my junior year in college, and while I was feeling confident in my major in Business administration, I experienced a sense of uncertainty that I would not find a job that aligns with my personal characteristics, strengths and interests.
In order to gain a sense of clarity, I began to take a series of personality tests online to gain a better insight on various career paths that would fit my personal traits. While I don’t believe one should base their career choices on a few personality tests, I do think they help build a better sense of self-awareness, which is exactly what I needed at the time.
Long story short, a common theme I noticed after taking a few of these tests was that I’m meant to help others and ultimately strive to make the world a better place (as cliché as it sounds).
Well, how am I supposed to do that? I immediately felt discouraged because I associated the phrase “helping people” with roles such as doctors and scientists, and honestly anything that involves looking at a periodic table is not my strong suit. I was three quarters of the way finished with my college career, so I started to question: Did I make the wrong choice?
Fast forward four months, I’m sitting at my desk in Milan, Italy where I was studying abroad for the spring semester. While I felt eager to immerse myself in a new environment and travel the world, I still experienced this impending anxiousness that I was never going to find my “calling.” As internship applications began to bombard my LinkedIn profile, I knew I needed to gain experience in a company, but was unsure as to what positions to apply for. Nothing seemed to spark my interest nor catch my eye.
But then it all clicked. Seriously, it really did.
As I was scrolling through newly posted internships, I was immediately intrigued when I saw a position for Publicis Health. The word “health” -specifically in an advertising agency- stood apart from the traditional companies listed on internship postings. So, I applied.
Fast forward four more months to present day, and here I am, a New Business Intern for Saatchi & Saatchi Wellness! I reflect back to all of the personality tests I took, and now it all makes sense. Working in a health and wellness agency means that every single employee has a strong pull in making meaningful change by moving consumers to seek greater well-being.
Currently, I’m about halfway through my internship, and I really cannot imagine myself spending my summer anywhere else. My days are filled with a sense of purpose and meaning because at Publicis Health, every effort is spent to ensure that all individuals are informed and know their options when it comes to their health.
I am so grateful to be a part of the Publicis Health internship program this summer, and I feel confident that this is where I’m supposed to be.
